FAQ’s

What is a smart switch?

The term smart is applied to many things these days. Pretty much anything that has internet connectivity is considered or called smart. A smart switch does the same job as a traditional light switch. It turns lights on and off.

You can still operate your lights from the wall switch but the connectivity to the internet and associated apps is what makes them smart. This connectivity allows for remote control from an app on your phone or via voice using Google Home or Amazon Alexa. “OK Google turn on my kitchen lights”

The smarts also extend to scheduling timers and having them interact with other things in your home.

Will they work in my home?

Our products will work in almost all existing homes, apartments and buildings. They simply replace existing light switches and power points. If you want to take advantage of the smarts you'll also need a wifi router and internet connection.

If any of our products don't work in your property, we will happily offer a refund.

Also don't forget: all installations must be carried out by a fully licensed qualified electrician.

What sort of Wifi do I need?

Our switches communicate with the internet via Wifi not a hub so you don’t need any additional hardware for them to work. The switches use WiFi Standard: 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n so as long as your Wifi router supports that you’ll be good to go.

Just make sure your Wifi has good coverage so the switches can connect. Checking your Wifi strength with your mobile is a great way to determine suitable locations for installation.

For example if you can’t get Wifi in your shed, the switches won’t have any connectivity out there.

Do I need Internet access?

For our Tuya switches — yes, for the smarts. They talk to a server in the cloud, so app control and automations need the Internet. The wall buttons always work, connection or not.

Our Matter switches are controlled locally, whichever app you use — Smart Life included. On your home wifi, the app or hub talks straight to the switch, no Internet required. Automations that run on a hub in your house (an Apple TV, HomePod or Home Assistant) carry on through an outage too; you'll only miss control from outside the house, and any automations that live in an app's cloud, until the connection returns.

Can I install these myself?

NO. Unless you are a fully licensed qualified electrician.

These switches ARE NOT plug and play, they replace your existing light switches and power points. Our products ARE NOT DIY. All installations regardless of if they are new installs or replacements of existing switches must be performed by a fully licensed qualified electrician.

DO NOT attempt to do your own electrical work. There are significant fines that may apply, your insurance company may not cover you in the event of fire or other incident. Performing your own electrical work can result in server injury or Death.

Can you recommend an electrician in my area?

We don't work with specific electricians — though we're always open to working with any qualified electrician, so if that's you, get in touch.

The good news is our switches are easy to install: they wire in just like a standard switch or power point. Your existing trusted sparky will have no trouble at all.

What colours do the switches come in?

All our switches and power points come in brilliant white or stunning black — pick your colour on the product page. A few products are white-only.

If you can't find what you're looking for, let us know — we may be able to do a special order for you.

Do the light switches and power points monitor use?

They sure do. Paired with the Smart Life app you'll see real-time current (mA), power (W), voltage (V) and total kWh — per switch, not one number for the whole house. Ideal when you're hunting a power-hungry culprit.

One nuance for the Matter crowd: power data isn't exposed over Matter. But Matter devices are happy living in two homes at once — join the switch to your Matter app for local control and to Smart Life for the power stats. Home Assistant users do exactly this: Matter handles on and off, while the Tuya integration supplies the energy entities.

What smart home products do these work with?

All our products leverage the Tuya platform, so you can pair them with the Smart Life app. Once you've paired them you can use either Google Home or Amazon Alexa to control your home with your voice, and IFTTT (if this then that) opens up a world of possibilities.

Our Matter versions go one better — as well as everything above, they work with Apple Home, Home Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. Same switch, same install, your choice of ecosystem.

What is Matter?

Matter is the smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. Instead of every brand having its own ecosystem, Matter devices speak one common language — so one switch can work with whichever app you prefer.

Our Matter switches and power points connect over your existing wifi, just like our Tuya range. There's nothing extra to buy — the smart speaker or Apple TV you already own does the talking.

Tuya or Matter — which should I choose?

If you're already running your home through the Smart Life app with Google Home or Alexa, the Tuya version does everything you need.

If you're an Apple Home household, or you just want maximum flexibility down the track, choose the Matter version. It still works with Smart Life, Google Home and Alexa — it simply adds Apple Home, Home Assistant and Samsung SmartThings to the list. Same product, same price, so when in doubt, go Matter.

What’s the difference between Matter over Wifi and Matter over Thread — do I need anything new?

Matter devices connect one of two ways: over the wifi you already have, or over Thread — a separate network for small battery-powered gadgets that needs an extra bit of hardware (a Thread border router) before it works.

Everything we sell is Matter over Wifi, so there’s nothing new to buy. Your electrician installs the switch, your smart home app joins it to your wifi, and you’re away.

Do the switches require a Neutral Wire?

iSwitch light switches and power points require power to stay connected to your wifi as well as iluminate the panel. As a result the switches require both a Neutral wire and Live wire.

A typical installation would see your electrician use the existing Neutral and Live wire behind your existing power point or light switch. If your home or office is wired without Neutral wires to your existiing switches please seek professional advice from your electrcian around the fesability of running new neutral wires to the switches.
